Bob Becker coined the idea of Humaginarium in 2011 while designing medical education for doctors who treat chronic illness. What about health education for patients, the ones who cluelessly endure chronic illness and rarely have the power to help themselves? Their anguish, fear, anger and depression are not covered by insurance and not mitigated by standards of care. Is that a problem?

His background in instructional systems prompted a solution: video games that comfort and engage patients while empowering them for self-care. There is plenty of evidence that this could work. He pitched the concept in a Games for Health Conference in Boston.

The pitch was thrilling, but he lacked time and money to develop it. That changed in 2016, when the inspiration returned in what is now called Humaginarium: the nudge to wellness.

“You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin — to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours — closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends.”

So said Merry Brandybuck to Frodo Baggins; and so say we to customers, investors, collaborators. and each other.

Humaginarium offers equity and deferred cash compensation to contributors. Read Mike Moyer's book Slicing Pie to understand how a "grunt fund" works.
